sync sound

During this weeks session we have learnt about sync sound and how to execute it properly in our own documentary. In this session we were taught how to use the H4N, we shown how to properly set up a boom mic and taught about the different mic's we might find useful for this documentary. While this session was very useful in developing our sound skills ect, as a group we have decided that we shall not be using sync sound within our film, as we are choosing not to show our contributors faces.

Sync sound is achieved by connecting a mic directly to the camera, so the sound is stored on the SD card within the camera and is synced on shoot. Sound can also be synced in post production. We achieve this with the use of a clapperboard. We use the clap at the beginning of the shot and the sound of the clap to sync up the video and the audio. Despite not using sync sound within our film, a clapper board shall still be used, as the individuals tattoos will be filmed, and then they will separately be interviewed. We used the clapper board simply to write on it which tattoo we were filming so we could successfully link up the sounds to the correct tattoos in post production.

During this session we were also taught about how to use the solar mics and how to attach them to contributors so they aren't visible on camera. Once again while this would be usual for future reference we will not have to use these in our own film.
